The Icelandic Opera has announced that it will stage Wagner’s iconic work “Die Walküre.”

The opera will star Iréne Theorin as Brünnhilde, Ólafur Kjartan Sigurõarson in the role of Wotan, Christopher Ventris as Siegmund, Claire Rutter as Sieglinde, Christa Mayer as Fricka, and Kristinn Sigmundsson in the role of Hunding. Eva Ollikainen conducts the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra in a production by Julia Burbach.

“It is of vital importance to us to be able to share this Wagner production with Icelandic audiences now that the future has started up again, and to provide the opportunity to experience this magnificent opera with a stellar cast. We shall have to disappoint Wagner by placing the orchestra on the stage, but not the audience! Hopefully there will be more Wagner to come at Icelandic Opera in the near future,” said CEO and Artistic Director of the Icelandic Opera Steinunn Birna Ragnarsdóttir in a press statement.

A collaborative project between the Icelandic Opera, Iceland Symphony Orchestra, and the Reykjavík Arts Festival, “Die Walküre” is a co-production with Opéra National de Bordeaux.

“Die Walküre” at the Icelandic Opera is set to be performed on Feb. 24 & 26, 2022.
