Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music Opera Theater is set to present “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay” starting on Nov. 15.

Michael Christie conducts a production of the Mason Bates and Gene Scheer opera directed by Bartlett Sher. The set design will be by 59 Productions with costume design by Jennifer Moeller. The work is based on Michael Chabon’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about two cousins in 1940s New York City who create The Escapist, a comic book superhero who destroys the Nazis and frees the oppressed.

The production of the opera runs through Nov. 22, 2024.

Leading up to the showcase, the company has presented roundtables with the creative team as well as panels and a symposium exploring the themes of the opera. There will also be a panel discussion on the date of the opening performance centering on developing new opera in higher education contexts.

The opera is set to open at the Metropolitan Opera next season in September 2025.
