IN Series to World Premiere ‘BOHEME in the Heights’
By Francisco SalazarIN Series is set to premiere its animated, Afro-Latinx reimagining of Puccini’s “BOHEME in the Heights.”
The work will screen accompanied by live music on Oct. 29, 2021, at Creative Alliance in Baltimore, and Oct. 30 and Oct. 31at GALA Hispanic Theatre in Washington DC.
The work takes place in a fictionalized Columbia Heights during the winter and spring of 2020. Production on the film started in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and music director Carlos Cesar Rodriguez and the seven lead singers recorded their roles in the isolation of their homes in the fall of 2020, while the Shenandoah University Chorus, recorded in small, distanced groups under the direction of Matthew Oltman.
Principals were then professionally filmed one by one against a plain background. Each singer was individually filmed safely lip-syncing to their tracks at IN Series’ home at Source Theatre on 14th street.
“BOHEME in the Heights” is set to star Alex Alburqueque, Peter Joshua Burroughs, Carl DuPont, Jarrod Lee, Louis Riva, Melissa Wimbish, and Judy Yannini. Emma Ayala and Timothy Nelson directed while Carlos César Rodríguez conducted.
