On Feb.5, the Vienna State Opera will open a new production of Verdi’s “Il Trovatore.”

The new production by Daniele Abbado is one of the most anticipated operatic events of the year as it stars Anna Netrebko in the role of Leonora and Roberto Alagna as Manrico. Ludovic Tézier stars as Il Conte di Luna and Lucina D’Intino is Azucena. Marco Armiliato will conduct the opera. The performances reunite Alagna and Netrebko after their acclaimed performances in Massenet’s “Manon” in 2007 and 2010. The two also performed an acclaimed “Romeo et Juliette” at the Metropolitan Opera in 2007 and it was broadcast Live in HD.

The production at the Vienna State Opera marks the first new production since 1993 at the theater and the first time the opera is shown since 2001. During that run Maria Guleghina and Leo Nucci led the cast. For the the occasion ORF will present the production on radio broadcast and it will be shown a total five times this season. Next season there will be a revival scheduled for September also starring Netrebko.

Netrebko has made Leonora one of her signature roles performing it at the Metropolitan Opera, Paris National Opera, Mariinsky Theater, Berlin Staatsoper and Salzburg Festival. Manrico has been part of Alagna’s repertoire for years and has sung it at the Paris National Opera, Orange Festival and on recording for EMI Classics.

“Il Trovatore” runs through Feb. 18 at the Vienna State Opera.
