Ian Bostridge, Victor Sicard & Elīna Garanča Lead New CD/DVD Releases
By Francisco SalazarThis week, audiences will get the chance to hear three stars in song recital albums. There will also be a number of choral selections and a world premiere recording of one of the oldest operas in the repertoire. Here is what you can stream on New Music Friday.
Die schöne Müllerin
Ian Bostridge continues his exploration of Schubert’s song cycles on PENTATONE with a recording of “Die schöne Müllerin.” He is joined by pianist Saskia Giorgini, who makes her PENTATONE debut.
In a press release, Bostridge notes, “If listening to the pounding hooves and anxious accents of Erlkönig in a German class had transmitted the first infection, it was close study of Schubert’s first song cycle in my German teacher’s flat of an evening that deepened and confirmed my incurable Lieder pathology.”
Lieder
Deutsche Grammophon releases Elīna Garanča’s latest album devoted to Lieder. The new record features music by Schumann and Brahms including Schumann’s Fraunliebe und Leben Op.42. Garanča is accompanied by Malcolm Martineau.
Ravel Mélodies
Baritone Victor Sicard is joined by his wife pianist Anna Cardona for a program of Ravel mélodies. PIAS – Harmonia Mundi releases the new album available on all streaming platforms.
Heroes
Young People’s Chorus of New York City has debuted a new virtual album dedicated to New York City’s and the entire country’s frontline workers. The new album is performed by YPC’s artists and recorded remotely from their respective homes. The album features such classics as “You’ll never Walk Alone,” “Three Little Birds” “Rainbow Tomorrow,” and “Give us Hope,” among others.
La Dori
Naxos releases Cesti’s rarely performed work from a production at the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music. The production from August 2019 stars Emőke Baráth, Francesca Ascioti, Francesca Lombardi Mazzulli, Rupert Enticknap, and Alberto Allegrezza. Ottavio Datone leads his period-instrument Accademia Bizantina.
Of the production, OperaWire said, “All in all, it was a successful return to Innsbruck for “La Dori,” 362 years after its premiere in the city. Under Dantone’s musical direction and Vizioli’s well-paced and engaging staging, one of Cesti’s best-known work’s provided evidence of the composer’s musical talent and assured theatrical instincts, and made for a very enjoyable evening.”
Voices of Our Time
Voices of Silicon Valley releases a new album which includes Stockhausen’s vocal masterpiece, Stimmung, as well as several works influenced by it, such as “Our Time” and “Kontakion for Pascha.” Earlier works from Cyril Deaconoff’s output are represented by the String Quartet and No Ladder Needs the Bird.
Technology and Applied Composition (TAC) students and faculty from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music collaborated with Voices of Silicon Valley on this project.
