By Logan Martell

On June 18, 2023, the Hungarian State Opera will celebrate legendary Hungarian soprano Éva Marton’s 80th birthday.

The event will include performances by former and current students, along with winners of the Éva Marton International Singing Competition. Directed by company artistic director András Almási-Tóth, the gala will also include special guest artist Jonathan Tetelman, with the HSO Orchestra led by general music director Balázs Kocsár.

As one of the most accomplished sopranos of her generation, Marton has performed on stages worldwide in the works of Verdi, Puccini, Richard Strauss, and Wagner, and alongside artists such as Birgit Nilsson, José Carreras, and Edita Gruberová.

Among her students are Ildikó Megyimórecz, Natália Tuznik, and Artúr Szeleczki, who will perform the terzet from Strauus’ “Die Fledermaus,” as well as selections from “Faust,” and “L’Arlesiana.” Prior winners of the competition will perform selections used when they competed, with artists including Mongolian baritone Badral Chulunbaatar, Russian soprano Julia Muzychenko, Serbian soprano Sonja Šarić, and Russian tenor Andrei Danilov.
