Hui He to Make History in Shanghai with Double Bill

By Francisco Salazar

Hui He is set to make history at the Shanghai Grand Theatre singing both “Cavalleria Rusticana” and “Pagliacci” on the same evening.

The soprano, who made her role debut as Santuzza in “Cavalleria Rusticana” during the 1999-2000 season, will return to the role for the first in 22 years. The soprano will also make her role debut as Nedda in Leoncavallo’s “Pagliacci.”

The performances are set to take place on Sept. 3 and 5 and will feature a semi-staged version directed by Martin Constantine and music conducted by M° Xu Zhong.

In statement the soprano said,  “I’m incredibly happy to come back to sing for the Chinese audience, and to bring them these two strong and passionate characters. I finally have the possibility to sing Santuzza again, a role that I never stopped loving and that I remembered really well. Now I can bring her back to life, thanks to my experience as an artist and actress. Nedda is a new friend, a character with beautiful music moments, that also needs a great and powerful theatrical personality.”

Hui He is the latest soprano to sing the two roles in the same performance following historic turns from Maria Jose Siri and Aleksandra Kurzak, who became the first two sopranos in the Arena di Verona’s history to sing the roles in the same performance.
