Hui He Leads Bilbao Opera’s ‘Alzira’

By Francisco Salazar

The Bilbao Opera is set to present Verdi’s rarely performed work “Alzira.”

The opera, which was composed for the Teatro San Carlo di Napoli, will be performed as part of the Bilbao Opera’s project Tutto Verdi.

Chinese soprano Hui He will sing the title role, a role she says is “strong, secure.” She added “She is a woman in love, ready to sacrifice herself for her lover Zamoro. The first interpreter of Alzira was legendary soprano Eugenia Tadolini, who created the characters of Linda di Chamounix and only two years before Alzira, Maria di Rohan, so the difficulties of this role consist in a Belcanto vocal line that alternates lyrical singing moments to elegiac and dramatic coloratura passages.”

The soprano will be joined by Maestro Daniel Oren and Sergio Escobar in the role of Zamoro and Juan Jesús Rodríguez as Gusmano. Jean Pierre Gamarra directs the production.

“Alzira” will be performed on April 23, 25, 27, and 30, 2022.
