Hugh Cutting Leads New Dallas Opera Production of ‘Orpheus and Eurydice’

By Francisco Salazar

The Dallas Opera is set to present Gluck’s “Orpheus and Eurydice” in a new production.

The work will be shown in four performances from Feb. 7 to 15 at the Winspear Opera House.

The new production will be directed by Joachim Schamberger and will be shown as a metaphor for caring for someone with dementia.

In this new production, Orpheus becomes the grieving elderly caretaker and after years of marriage, his wife, Eurydice, has not died but instead has been diagnosed with dementia, thus being as “unreachable” to Orpheus as she would have been in the Underworld. Orpheus uses love and music to bridge Eurydice’s lost memories and lead her out of the shadows of dementia, her personal Hades.

Hugh Cutting sings Orpheus in his U.S. and house debut alongside Madison Leonard as Eurydice. The cast is rounded out by soprano Amber Norelai as Amore. Music Director Emmanuel Villaume conducts the original score from the 1762 production.

The final performance on Feb. 15 will also be live streamed for free on The Dallas Opera’s YouTube channel and digital website.
