Houston Grand Opera’s Managing Director to Depart, Company to Change Leadership Structure

By David Salazar

The Houston Grand Opera has announced that Managing Director Perryn Leech will leave the organization, effective on Dec. 31, 2020.

Leech has been with the company for nearly 14 years and served as its managing director for the last nine years.

With Leech’s departure, the company will change its leadership structure. As it stands, the organization’s leadership duties are divided up between the company’s Artistic and Music Director, Patric Summers, and Leech; both report to the Board of Directors. However, now the company will seek to recruit a General Director, a lone leader for the company. Summers will remain Artistic and Music Director and will report directly to the new General Director.

Under Leech’s leadership, the company has seen the growth of numerous new initiatives including HGOco and HGO Studio. He was also instrumental in helping the company continue its season despite major challenges imposed by Hurricane Harvey. Leech will continue working with the company as a consultant during the leadership transition.

“Houston Grand Opera is an extraordinary and special company and it has been a huge privilege to co-lead it through some amazing, and some challenging times,” Leech stated in a press release. “I am incredibly proud of my colleagues for their outstanding work. I wish the company a bright future and I will continue to be amongst HGO’s biggest fans.”
