Houston Grand Opera to Present Documentary on Making of ‘The Snowy Day’

The Houston Grand Opera has announced that it will present a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of “The Snowy Day.”

“The Making of The Snowy Day: An Opera for All on HGO” is set for online release on Dec. 10, 2020 and will feature a collaboration between the opera’s creative team with documentarian Annalise Ophenlian. The film explores the creative process of composer Joel Thompson and librettist Andrea Pinkney as they created an opera based on Ezra Jack Keats’ book of the same name.

The opera tells the story of a little boy who venutres into the snow alone; published in 1963, it featured the first time a Black boy was a protagonist of a mainstream children’s book.

“The Making of The Snowy Day: An Opera for All” can be viewed on the Houston Grand Opera’s official website or Marquee.tv, where it will be available for one month. The opera will star Raven McMillon, Karen Slack, Elena Villalón, Andres Acosta, Ricardo Garcia, Nicholas Newton, Blake Denson, and Cory McGee.
