Houston Grand Opera to Bring Free Summer Programming to Children

By David Salazar

Houston Grand Opera has announced a slate of free summer programs for children and families.

Led by HGO teaching artists, the initiative centers on two offerings. “Meet an Opera Singer!” invites students of all ages to engage with a professional singer, ask questions about their career, and experience operatic performance firsthand.

“Storybook Opera,” aimed at Pre-K through second grade, brings children’s books to life through song, with this summer’s selections including “The Three Little Pigs,” “Goldilocks and the Three Bears,” “Hansel and Gretel,” “Opera Cat,” “The Armadillo’s Dream” by HGO chorister Dennis Arrowsmith, and “World Cup Women” by Meg Waters.

“By bringing this free programming to students in libraries, parks, and other spaces across the city, our HGO team is introducing young people to the magic of storytelling through music,” said General Director and CEO Khori Dastoor, per an official press release.

Performances will take place at branches of the Harris County Public Library System, Levy Park, Bellaire City Library, and The Woodlands Children’s Museum between late May and late July.
