Houston Grand Opera Launches Virtual Summer Camp for Children

By David Salazar

The Houston Grand Opera has announced a new online summer camp called “Discover Opera.”

The event invites youths ages 13-18 to learn songs appropriate for auditions while developing fluency in the international phonetic alphabet and engage with some of opera’s biggest stars. They will also get to practice stage combat and movement while strengthening their acting skills.

The virtual summer camp is set to kick off on June 16 and runs through July 2 for three days a week from 9:30 a.m. through 2:45 p.m. with breaks throughout the day.

The virtual classes will take place via Zoom.

The Houston Grand Opera canceled the remainder of its 2019-20 season due to the coronavirus pandemic. It also was forced to cancel its Sing Move Play, Create an Opera, and Art of Opera camps that were originally scheduled for this June 2020.
