Houston Grand Opera Announces 2020 Concert Of Arias Winners
By Dejan VukosavljevicThe Houston Grand Opera has announced the winners of the 32nd annual Eleanor McCollum Competition for Young Singers Concert of Arias, which took place in the Cullen Theater of the Wortham Theater Center.
The company announced that the first place prize of $10,000 was awarded to the mezzo-soprano Sun-Ly Pierce. Meanwhile, second place prize of $5,000 went to the bass Cory McGee and the third place prize of $3,000 was awarded by the tenor Angel Romero.
The Ana María Martínez Encouragement Award of $2,000 went to the soprano Tatiana Carlos while Laureano Quant won the Online Viewers’ Choice Award.
This past fall, Pierce joined the Broad Street Orchestra as Dorinda in Handel’s “Acis and Galatea.” She returns to the Music Academy of the West this summer as a 2020 Vocal Fellow, performing the role of L’enfant in Ravel and Colette’s “L’enfant et les sortilèges” and covering Hänsel in Humperdinck’s “Hänsel und Gretel.”
McGee’s recent engagements include the title role in Mozart and Da Ponte’s “Le Nozze di Figaro”, the role of Pandolfe in Massenet and Caïn’s “Cendrillon”, and Leporello in Mozart and Da Ponte’s “Don Giovanni.”
Romero’s recent opera performances include the roles of Tamino and Monostatos in Mozart and Schikaneder’s opera “The Magic Flute”, and the role of Ruiz in Verdi and Cammarano’s “Il Trovatore”.
Carlos made her professional debut at the Theatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro in 2016 as Barena in Janáček’s “Jenůfa”. This season she has debuted as Elisabetta in Donizetti and Bardari’s “Maria Stuarda.”
Quant’s previous credits include the role of Zurga in Bizet, Cormon and Carré’s “Les Pêcheurs de Perles” and the role of Demetrius in Britten and Pears’ “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” among others.
Past prize winners include Jamie Barton, Joyce DiDonato, Ana María Martínez, Ryan McKinny, and Tamara Wilson.
