Hong Kong Polytechnic University to Present ‘Carmen Wong’

Hong Kong Polytechnic University will feature performances of “Carmen Wong” on Oct. 21 and 22, 2025.

The showcase will be presented by the English and Communication Department of the University in cooperation with the French May Festival and the French Consulate General in Hong Kong and Macau.

“Carmen Wong” sets the iconic opera in a bar in 1970s Hong Kong. This production will star Ashley Chui as Carmen, Etta Fung as Micaëla, Chen Yong as Don José, and Isaac Droscha as Escamillo. Hus Wei-en directs a new musical arrangement by Marco Iannelli.

“‘Carmen Wong’ represents the culmination of the ‘Carmen 2025’ programme—a year-long celebration supported by the European Union Office in Hong Kong, with participation from the Consulates-General of France, Spain, and Italy, French May, the Italian Cultural Institute, the Dante Alighieri Society, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Opera Hong Kong,” said Madame Bouyé, Consul for culture, education and science, Conseillère de coopération et d’action culturelle, Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau This unique adaptation commemorates the 150th anniversary of Georges Bizet’s opera and the 180th anniversary of Prosper Mérimée’s novel on which it is based. Designed specifically to captivate Chinese audiences, Carmen Wong offers a fresh and compelling interpretation of this timeless classic.”
