Hibla Gerzmava is set to sing the title role of “Aida” at the Metropolitan Opera.

In a press release announcing her upcoming Carnegie Hall recital, the soprano revealed she will sing the title role during the 2020-21 season in Michael Mayer’s new production.

The soprano will likely alternate with Anna Netrebko who will open the production on opening night of the season. The opening cast will also include Anita Rachvelishvili, Piotr Beczala, and Ludovic Tézier.

According to general manager Peter Gelb, the new production by Michael Mayer “will be as epic and grand as the current production in a completely different way.” He also announced that the new production will eliminate one of the current staging’s two intermissions and it will feature projections by Mark Grimmer of 59 Productions.

More information on the production is set to be released in February when the 2020-21 season is announced.
