Hibla Gerzmava Out of Metropolitan Opera’s 2022-23 Revival of ‘Tosca’

By Francisco Salazar

The Metropolitan Opera has announced a cast change for its production of “Tosca” during the 2022-23 season.

The company said that Liudmyla Monastyrska will replace Hibla Gerzmava in the title role in performances on March 30, April 2, 5, and 15, 2023.

The announcement comes two months after the beginning of the war in Ukraine and two months after General Manager Peter Gelb vowed to stop working with artists tied to Putin unless they distanced themselves from him. Gerzmava has openly supported Putin, especially in 2014 when she signed a letter supporting the Annexation of Crimea. She has also performed in government events and even congratulated the president on his 69th birthday.

Monastyrska joins Yusif Eyvazov and Željko Lučić with Domingo Hindoyan conducting.
