The Staatstheater Kassel, Staatstheater Wiesbaden and Staatstheater Darmstadt, along with the Landestheater Marburg and Stadttheater Gießen, have decided to shut down until January 31, 2021 due to ongoing concerns over the spread of COVID-19.

The five theaters made the decision after extensive consultations with Angela Dorn, the Minister for Culture of the state of Hessen.

“The long-term perspective is very important for theaters and cultural institutions in order to make meaningful and economically viable decisions,” Dorn said in a statement. “It is very important to remain flexible and swiftly adjust to the fast-changing COVID-19 regulations.”

The German government has officially extended the lockdown until January 10, 2021. Europe is currently undergoing a massive spread of COVID-19 that has forced most countries to engage in a second lockdown.
