Heartbeat Opera To Present ‘Tosca’ and ‘Lady M’ in Spring Festival

Heartbeat Opera has announced the lineup of their Spring Festival, marking their return to live performances since the pandemic.

The festival will see two well-known works given a modern treatment. The first will be Puccini’s “Tosca,” co-adapted by Iranian-American director Shadi G. and music director Jacob Ashworth. This 100-minute version sets the plot in a present-day religious dictatorship, with subtitles available in English and Farsi.

“Tosca’s” cast includes Anush Avetisyan as Tosca; Chad Kranak as Cavaradossi; Gustavo Feulien as Scarpia; Christopher Nazarian as the Sacristan, Spoletta, and Jailer; and Joe Lodato as Angelotti and Shepherd.

Heartbeat Opera will next present “Lady M,” will tell the story of Verdi’s “Macbeth” through the eyes of Lady Macbeth. This 90-minute version is co-adapted by Ethan Heard and Jacob Ashworth, with direction by Emma Jaster and musical arrangements for both works by Daniel Schlosberg.

“Lady M’s” cast includes Lisa Algozzini as Lady M; Kenneth Stavert as Macbeth; Isaiah Musik-Ayala as Banquo; and the sisters will be sung by Samarie Alicea, Taylor-Alexis Dupont, Sishel Claverie

Performances will be held at the Baruch Performing Arts Center in New York City, with tickets available beginning at $35.
