Heartbeat Opera to Present ‘The Golden Cock’ a Drag Adaptation of ‘The Golden Cockerel’

By Chris Ruel

Heartbeat Opera will present “The Golden Cock” at Roulette in Brooklyn on Nov. 9 at 7:30 PM and Nov. 10 at 7:00 PM and 9:30 PM.

Heartbeat Opera’s adaptation of Rimsky-Korsakov’s “The Golden Cockerel” takes the original story and transforms it into a drag show with costumes by celebrated New York designer David Quinn. The drag extravaganza is Heartbeat’s most ambitious ever.

The show includes songs and arias from Rimsky-Korsakov’s “The Golden Cockerel,” “May Night,” and “Sadko;” Rachmaninoff’s “Vocalise;” Wynton Marsalis’ “Abyssinian Mass;” Rossini’s “La Cenerentola” and “L’Italiana in Algeri;” Ahrens and Flaherty’s “Anastasia: the Musical;” Leoncavallo’s “Pagliacci;” Meyebeer’s “Dinorah;” and Irving Berlin’s “Annie Get Your Gun.”

The cast comprises soprano Ariana Wehr, contralto Sara Couden, countertenor Daniel Moody, tenor Elliott Paige, bass John Taylor Ward, and Maxim Ibadov as the emcee. Special guest John Holiday will take to the stage during the Nov. 9 Gala show.

Nico Krell, who has assistant-directed the past three drag spectaculars, will make his directorial debut with Heartbeat Opera. The show’s Music Directors are Jacob Ashworth and Daniel Schlossberg, with arrangements also by Schlossberg.
