Heartbeat Opera to Present ‘Slaylem: The Witch Trials’

By David Salazar

Heartbeat Opera is set to present “Slaylem: The Witch Trials” this October.

The original drag opera created by Nico Krell and Jacob Ashworth features arrangements by Dan Schlosberg of music by Britten, Ponchielli, Adams, Copland, Floyd Pedeerecki, Mozart, Donizetti, and Bellini, featuring newly written English Lyrics. The work is a gothic comedy that “dances on the grave of early American prudishness while pointing to the Puritan instincts that threaten to rise again.”

The cast for the show, which will be directed by Krell, stars Curtis Bannister, Rodolfo Giron, Bernard Holcomb, Jamilyn Manning-White, Hans Tashjian, John Taylor Ward, and Angela Yam.

“In this era where justices recklessly flaunt their impunity, policing our culture with prejudice, we should take a look at those notorious early days of the American courts, at their determination and failure to fight corruption,” said Krell per an official press release. “We’re still haunted by the prudish legacy of the American Puritans—how joyous to exorcise those ghosts in the beloved Heartbeat Opera drag fashion: with transcendent costumes, sublime music, and outrageous queer mischief.”

In sum, there will be four performances between Oct. 10-12, with a gala show opening the entire run. All showcases will take place at Judson Memorial Church in New York City.
