This week audiences get to experience several solo albums as well as a recording of Mahler’s monumental symphony.
Handel’s Italians
Carlo Vistoli explores the legacy of the Italian castrati who helped make the genre of oratorio famous in England in his new album recorded for Harmonia Mundi. At the heart of the recording are the arias Georg Friedrich Händel wrote for some of the best-known castrati from Italy in his London oratorios. Joining the countertenor are conductor Emm
In a statement Vistoli said, “When the idea arose of a new recording project with Harmonia Mundi devoted entirely to Händel’s English-language oratorios, we felt it would be interesting to approach this repertoire from a rather unusual perspective, focusing on the role played at the time by the castrati and, more broadly, by Italian singers.”
AMOUR LES CHANSONS QUE J’AIME
Navona Records releases Kirstin Chávez’s new album. The record showcases the mezzo’s all-time favorite French love songs. She is joined by friend and celebrated pianist Paolo André Gualdi.
Mahler Symphony No. 2
Naïve Classiques releases a new recording of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection” from the Orchestre National de France (ONF) and its Music Director, Cristian Măcelaru. The work was recorded live over two evenings in October 2024 at the Maison de la Radio et de la Musique in Paris, and features the Choeur de Radio France under chorus director Lionel Sow, with soprano Hanna-Elisabeth Müller and mezzo-soprano Karen Cargill.
So Poétique!
So Poétique! is a follow-up to tenor Cyrille Dubois’s exploration of lesser-known works from the opéra-comique repertoire. In this new album Dubois’s new album includes works by Saint-Saëns, Massenet, Gounod, Théodore Dubois, César Franck, Gabriel Fauré, Benjamin Godard, Ambroise Thomas, and Louis Vierne. The Brussels Philharmonic conducted by Pierre Dumoussaud accompany the tenor.
Britten: The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, Les Illuminations, Choral Dances from Gloriana, Sinfonia da Requiem
Alpha Classics releases an album paying tribute to composer Benjamin Britten, who will be commemorated in 2026 on the 50th anniversary of his death. Lawrence Foster conducts the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra with soloist Julie Roset.
