Hanna Brammer, Bizhou Chang, Meroe Adeeb Tchomobe Headline Opera Columbus’ Reimagined ‘La Traviata’

By David Salazar

Opera Columbus has announced that it will present a unique take on Verdi’s “La Traviata.”

The production, which is made in conjunction with Out of the Box Opera and helmed by David Lefkowich and Julia Noulin-Mérat, will feature audience members as guests of Violetta’s party to kick off the opera.

“My passion is bringing opera closer to the audience. There’s an excitement in the audience when the action is happening all around them that you don’t get from more traditional staging,” Lefkowich said in an official press statement issue by the company.

Moreover, the company will use three singers for each of the opera’s acts to highlight the central character’s evolution.

“Musically, Violetta has three different voices, and the singing differs greatly from one act to another,” Lefkowich added. “To highlight her growth and transformation throughout the story, we have three phenomenally talented, very different artists who will really dig deep into Violetta’s biggest moments in the piece.”

The three sopranos include Hanna Brammer for Act one, Bizhou Chang for Act two, and Meroe Adeeb Tchomobe for Act three. Taking on the role of Alfredo will be Benjamin Butcher, while Paul LaRosa will play Germont.

The opera opens on June 3, 2022 and runs through June 5.
