Handel and Haydn Society to Present ‘Messiah,’ Launches ‘CitySing’ Program

The Handel and Haydn Society (H+H) will present Händel’s ‘Messiah’ at Symphony Hall starting on November 29, 2024.

The production, which will run through Dec. 1 will feature period instruments and soloists including soprano Jeanine De Bique, countertenor Reginald Mobley, tenor Nicholas Phan, and baritone Sumner Thompson.

The company also revealed the introduction of  “CitySing,” a new initiative conceived by Artistic Director Jonathan Cohen to celebrate and showcase the choral community of Greater Boston. The program allows singers from local choral ensembles, and high school-aged members of the H+H Youth Choruses Chamber Choir to join the soloists and the H+H Orchestra and Chorus on stage to perform the “Messiah.”

“Much like the oratorio Messiah, CitySing is a celebration of voices,” said H+H Artistic Director Jonathan Cohen in an official press release. “The breadth and depth of talent within Boston’s singing community and in our own Youth Choruses is quite impressive. This multiplicity of voices joins with our professional chorus and exceptional soloists to create a most spectacular Messiah and make this beloved holiday tradition new once again.”

These performances make the 171st consecutive year that the organization presents Händel’s iconic work. The first performance was on Christmas Day in 1815 at Kings Chapel in Boston. Additionally, the Dec. 1 showcase makes the 450th performance of the complete work by H+H.
