Hampstead Garden Opera to Present First London Opera Post After COVID-19

By Francisco Salazar

The Hampstead Garden Opera has announced the first opera production in London post-COVID.

The company will present an open-air, socially-distanced production of Gustav Holst’s “Sāvitri” complying with government regulations.

The one-act opera will take place in the gardens of Lauderdale House, Highgate, with two performances per evening on August 13, 15, 20, and 22. The production will be staged by Julia Mintzer, and conducted by Thomas Payne.

Cast, orchestra, and chorus details will be announced in the coming weeks.

“Sāvitri” is a chamber opera, which had its world premiere in 1916. Holst intended the work to be performed in the open air.

The Hampstead Garden Opera recently postponed its fall season to 2021 when it is expected to present a production of “Le Nozze di Figaro.”
