Guildhall School of Music and Drama to Present World Premiere of ‘The Angel Esmeralda’

By David Salazar

The Guildhall School of Music and Drama is set to present the world premiere of “The Angel Esmeralda,” a new opera by composer Lliam Paterson and librettist Pamela Carter.

The first performance is set for Feb. 24, 2020 with subsequent shows taking place on Feb. 26, 28, and March 2 at the Silk Street Theatre. The opera will be directed by Martin Lloyd-Evans, with Gregor Donnelly as the designer and Robbie Butler as lighting designer. Dominic Wheeler will conduct.

“The Angel Esmeralda” is adapted from a short story by Don DeLillo about a girl who dies when she enters the ruins of a South Bronx estate (or maybe she doesn’t).

The work was commissioned by the Scottish Opera. Patterson, who is a former Emerging Artist Composer in Residence with the Scottish Opera, has created such operas as “The Eighth Door,” “BambinO,” “Touching Eden,” “Radiant,” “Anatomy of a Diva,” and “Bluebeard’s Cake.”
