Guildford Choral to Present ‘Mass in Time of War’

By David Salazar

Guildford Choral will perform at Holy Trinity Church in Guildford on March 14 at 7:30 p.m., with a program pairing Haydn and Mozart with a new work by British composer Janet Wheeler.

The evening opens with Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G minor before turning to Haydn’s “Mass in Time of War,” also known as the “Paukenmesse.” The program closes with Wheeler’s “I Sing and Ever Shall,” a choral work setting texts by Emily Dickinson, Rabindranath Tagore, Sara Teasdale, Abraham Cowley, and Robert Herrick, with one movement drawn from Scottish mouth music.

Soloists are soprano Aneska Diament, contralto Angelina Dorlin-Barlow, tenor Jacob Cole, and bass Oliver Barker, all supported by the Josephine Baker Trust.

Jonathan Willcocks conducts, with Southern Pro Musica serving as the evening’s orchestra.
