Grigory Shkarupa Replaces René Pape in Staatsoper Berlin’s ‘Lohengrin’

The Staatsoper Unter den Linden has announced that bass Grigory Shkarupa will replace René Pape in the role of Heinrich der Vogler in Wagner’s “Lohengrin” for the performances on April 24, 30, and May 7, 2022.

Shkarupa joins a cast that includes Vida Miknevičiūtė as Elsa von Brabant, Martin Gantner as Friedrich von Telramund, Iréne Theorin as Ortrud, Adam Kutny as Heerrufer des Königs, and Roberto Alagna in the title role. Matthias Pintscher conducts a production by Calixto Bieito.

Grigory Shkarupa has been a member of the ensemble of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden since September 2015. He has performed at the Bregenz Festival, Opéra de Rouen Normandie, and Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, among others. His roles include Masetto in Mozart’s “Don Giovanni,” Truffaldin in Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos,” Angelotti in Puccini’s “Tosca,” Don Basilio in Rossini’s “Il barbiere di Siviglia,” Colline in “La Bohème,” and Caronte in Monteverdi’s “L’Orfeo,” among others.

Pape is scheduled to perform the role of König Marke in Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde” at the Wiener Staatsoper in April and May 2022.
