Update: Gregory Kunde Returns To Metropolitan Opera
Tenor to Get Three Performances of “Samson et Dalila”
By Francisco SalazarUpdate: The Met Opera has announced that Kunde will sing all of performances that Antonenko was originally scheduled to sing.
Tenor Gregory Kunde returned to the Metropolitan Opera on March 13, 2019, surprising audience members.
The American tenor replaced Aleksandrs Antonenko in the second and third Act of “Samson et Dalila.” At the curtain call prior to the second act, it was announced that Antonenko was ill and would therefore not be able to continue the performance.
Kunde’s performance marked the first time the tenor took the Met stage since 2007. During that year he performed “I Puritani.” The show also marked his eighth performance with the company where he debuted in 1987.
Kunde recently performed “Manon Lescaut” at the Dallas Opera, which marked the first time since 2007 that the tenor appeared in a staged opera in the U.S.
Antonenko is slated for three more performances from March 16 through the 23. Kristen Benedikt sings the final performance on March 28, 2019.
