Greek National Opera to Stream New ‘Don Giovanni’ Production

By Francisco Salazar

The Greek National Opera has announced that Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” will be the first of GNO’s international co-productions scheduled to be created and premiered in Athens and on the company’s streaming platform.

The company announced that due to the pandemic the production was not presented to a live audience but was video recorded in the Stavros Niarchos Hall.

The world premiere will be presented on GNO TV starting on Feb. 14, 2021. The performance will be available on GNO’s streaming platform and will then be shown in Göteborg in 2021 and in Copenhagen in 2022.

For the GNO performance, the cast included Greek soloists Tassis Christoyannis, Vassiliki Karayanni, Yannis Christopoulos, Petros Magoulas, Anna Stylianaki, Tassos Apostolou, Nikos Kotenidis, and Chrissa Maliamani. Daniel Smith conducted the production by John Fulljames, which saw the sets and costumes created entirely in GNO’s construction workshops.

“Don Giovanni” was rehearsed in October and November 2020 and the performance was video recorded in mid-December in the Stavros Niarchos Hall. The opera was video recorded by a state-of-the-art eight-camera system and directed using special filmmaking techniques, in order to offer a high-quality viewing and listening experience to the audience.
