Greek National Opera to Present National Premiere of ‘Les Contes d’Hoffman’

By Logan Martell

On December 18, 2022, Greek National Opera will present the national premiere of Offenbach’s “Les contes d’Hoffmann.”

This co-production between GNO and La Monnaie will be staged by prominent European director Krzysztof Warlikowski, Artistic Director of Warsaw’s Nowy Teatr, and conducted by Lukas Karytinos.

Due to its unfinished nature, the version of the work presented will be the most recent critical edition, prepared by musicologists Michael Kaye and Jean-Christophe Keck. The staging will take inspiration from films such as “The Shining,” “A Star is Born,” and “Inland Empire,” to accentuate the metatextual structure and plot.

The cast features tenors Adam Smith and Yannis Christopoulos as Hoffman; sopranos Nicole Chevalier and Vassiliki Karayanni as Stella, Olympia, Antonia, and Guilietta; mezzos Mary-Ellen Nesi and Marisia Papalexious as La Muse and Nicklausse; and basses Tassos Apostolou and Petros Magoulas as Lindorf, Coppelius, and Dr. Miracle.

The production will run for eight performances through January 4, 2023, and is made possible through a grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. GNO will continue their season January 26 with a new production of Verdi’s “Falstaff.”
