Jonas Kaufmann, Sonya Yoncheva, Kristine Opolais, Matthew Polenzani Headline Greek National Opera’s 2021 Season

The Greek National Opera has announced a program for the 2021 season.

For the purposes of this article, our focus will be on opera-related performances.

The company will present “The Cornelian Secret” which includes love poems by Lord Byron. The performance will star tenor Christos Kechris, baritone Vangelis Maniatis, and baritone Sotiris Triantis.

Marcelo Álvarez stars in “Andrea Chenier” alongside Dmitri Platanias and Maria Agresta. Philippe Augin conducts.

Streaming Dates: TBA – the performances on Jan. 28 & 31, 2021 will be recorded.

Kharálampos Goyós’ “Anthony’s Death” will world premiere in a production conducted by the composer and directed by Dimitris Karantzas. The opera will star Georgios Iatrou, Vassilis Kavayas, and Marissia Papalexiou.

Performance Dates: Feb. 21-March 7, 2021

As part of its “Odes to Byron” cycle, the company will present “Hebrew Melodies” by Isaac Nathan. Mezzo-soprano Lenia Safiropoulu, tenor Vassilis Kavayas, and pianist Apostolos Palios will perform.

Performance Dates: Feb. 28, 2021

Audiences will get a chance to check out Paolo Carrer’s “Despo” in a double bill with Nikos Skalkottas’ “Greek Dances.” “Despo” will star Artemis Bogri, Dimitri Paksoglou, Tannis Selitsaniotis, and Diamanti Krisotaki.

Dimitri Platanias, Cellia Costea, Dionysios Sourbis, Aphrodite Patoulidou, and Miranda Makrynioti star in “Le Nozze di Figaro.” Vassilis Christopoulos conducts.

Performance Dates: March 26 – April 17, 2021

Vivaldi’s “Juditha Triumphans” stars Delphine Galou, Kristina Hammarström, Karina Gauvin, and Theodora Baka. Markellos Chryssicos conducts.

Performance Dates: April 16 – 22, 2021

Carrer’s “Frossini” will be conducted by Elias Voudouris with Tassis Christoyannis, Yannis Christopoulos, Vassiliki Karayanni, and Tassos Apostolou starring.

Performance Dates: April 25, 2021

In May, the company will present the world premiere of “Jus Soli,” which is part of its “The Revolution Through the Eyes of the Other” cycle. The work will be conducted by Miltos Logiadls with the full cast yet to be announced.

Dmitri Platanias stars in the title role of “Rigoletto” with Ekaterina Siurina as Gilda, and Matthew Polenzani as the Duke. Philippe Augin conducts.

Marina Abramovic’s “The Seven Deaths of Maria Callas” gets a revival, conducted by Yoel Gamzou. Actor Willem Dafoe stars.

Performance Dates: July 7 – 21, 2021

Kristine Opolais and Cellia Costea take on the title role of “Tosca,” alongside Dimitri Platanias, Marcelo Álvarez, Ramón Vargas and George Petean. Pier Giorgio Morandi conduct.

Performance Dates: July 28 – 31, 2021

Jonas Kaufmann performs a concert of opera arias at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.

“1812, Greek Revolution and Set Poetry” will feature music of the Opera Composition Competition. Miltos Logiadis conducts.

Eva-Maria Westbroek, Sergei Semishkur, and Yanni Yannissis star in “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk.” Vassilis Christopoulos conducts.

Performance Dates: Oct. 10 – 23, 2021

Sonya Yoncheva will perform in concert alongside conductor Francesco Ciampa and the Greek National Opera Orchestra.

Performance Dates: Nov. 4, 2021

In November, the organization will showcase the Greek premiere of Marco Monnet and Arno Fabre’s opera-ballet “Bibilolo.”

Performance Dates: Nov. 5-7, 2021

“A Greek Songbook” will feature a creative team including Nicoleta Chatzopoulou, Foivos Delivorias, Nalyssa Green, Alkinoos Ioannidis, Dimitris Kamarotos, Pavlos Katsivelis, K.Bhta, Apostolos Kitsos, Petros Klampanis, Lolek, Dimitri Papageorgiou, Michalis Paraskakis, Pavlos Pavlidis, Giorgos Poulios, Filippos Sakagian, Michalis Siganidis, Fotis Siotas, Nicolas Tzortzis, James Wiley, Savina Yannatou, Fanis Zachopoulos, and Sofia Zafeiriou, among many others.

Performance Dates: Nov. 12-21, 2021

The season will also include the family opera “The Magic Pillows” conducted by Nicolas Vassiliou and directed by Natasha Triantafylli.

Performance Dates: Nov. 14, 2021 -Jan. 23, 2022

The season will also feature several music theatre plays, feature films, and other ballets.
