Great Performances to Broadcast Leonard Bernstein’s Mass with Paulo Szot

Great Performances is set to present Leonard Bernstein’s Mass on May 15 at 9 p.m. EDT on PBS.

The performance from the 2019 Ravinia Festival features 200 artists, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, baritone Paulo Szot, and conductor Marin Alsop. The choral ensemble Vocality, the Chicago Children’s Choir, and the Highland Park High School Marching Band also perform.

Szot is well known for winning the Tony award for “South Pacific” and has performed at the Metropolitan Opera in such works as “Manon,” “Madama Butterfly,” “Die Fledermaus,” and “The Nose.” He has also performed at such theaters as the Teatro Real and Opera Monte Carlo. He was recently on Broadway in “Chicago.”

Alsop is conductor, music director for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and music curator for the Ravinia Festival 2018-19. She was a protege of Bernstein and has conducted all around the world.
