Grange Park Opera, Surrey to Stream ‘Owen Wingrave’

By David Salazar

Grange Park Opera, Surrey, is set to stream a production of “Owen Wingrave” starting on Dec. 9, 2020.

The Britten opera was filmed at haunted houses throughout Surrey and London and will be part of the company’s interim season, which features 19 brand new events.

The opera stars Ross Ramgobin as Owen with his aunt portrayed by Susan Bullock. Other cast members include Richard Berkeley Steele, William Dazeley, Janis Kelley, James Way, Madeleine Pierard, Kitty Whately, and Richard Berkeley Steele.

Directed by Stephen Medcalf, the opera has been set in 2001 on the brink of the war with Afghanistan.

“A minimal crew maintained distancing in intimate domestic interiors and COVID restrictions required the cast to costume themselves. I’ve given full rein to the satirical, often blackly comic aspects of the opera,” Medcalf stated in a press release. “Alongside that there are three serious themes: the pressure from society to conform; the courage it takes to stand up for who we really are; the destructive love of family.”
