Gran Teatre del Liceu to Showcase John Adams’ ‘Anthony and Cleopatra’ during 2023-24 Season

The Gran Teatre del Liceu is set to present John Adams’ “Anthony and Cleopatra” during the 2023-24 season.

The new opera is a co-production with San Francisco Opera, Teatro Massimo Palermo, and Metropolitan Opera. “Anthony and Cleopatra” will make its world premiere during the San Francisco Opera’s 100th anniversary in a production by Elkhanah Pulitzer.

The Gran Teatre del Liceu’s run will be the European premiere of the work, which is based on the play by William Shakespeare with passages by Plutarch and Virgil well as scenes by Elkhanah Pulitzer and Lucia Scheckner.

John Adams is well-known for such operas as “Nixon in China” (1987), “The Death of Klinghoffer” (1991), “El Niño” (2000), “Doctor Atomic” (2005), “A Flowering Tree” (2006), and “Girls of the Golden West” (2017).
