Gran Teatre Del Liceu To Host Viñas Competition

The Gran Teatre del Liceu is set to host the 56th edition of the Concurs Internacional de Cant Tenor Viñas.

The competition, which will take place from Jan. 16 through 27, 2019 will showcase 529 singers from 61 singers. The Liceu will stream the finals on Jan. 25, 2019 and the winner’s concerts on Jan. 27, 2019.

The competition is one of the most prestigious in the opera world and it gives winners the opportunity to perform at some of the leading theaters and grants to continue studies.

Among the companies that participate in the competition are the Bolshoi Theatre, the Metropolitan Opera, Opéra National de París, Royal Opera House, Teatro alla Scala, and Teatro Real de Madrid, among others.

Founded in 1963, the competition was named after the Catalán tenor Francisco Viñas and has since discovered a number of great artists. Among those winners are Tamara Wilson in 2011, Javier Camarena in 2005, Violeta Urmana in 1992, Zeljko Lucic in 1997, and Antonio Gandía in 2004.
