Gran Teatre del Liceu Changes ‘Die Zauberflote’ Production Due to Technical Difficulties

By Francisco Salazar

The Gran Teatre del Liceu has announced a production change to its upcoming “Die Zauberflöte.”

In a press release, Liceu noted that due to the difficulty of the production and a limited schedule with the technical team and soloists, the company has been obliged to change the production. As a result, the opera house will present a revival of Sir David McVicar’s production instead of the originally-planned Simon McBurney staging.

McBurney’s production has been performed at the Dutch National Opera and Festival Aix-En-Provence and was slated to premiere at the Metropolitan Opera. However, due to the pandemic, the production was canceled. This rendition of Mozart’s final masterwork is a co-production with the English National Opera.

“Die Zauberflöte” is slated to open on June 20, 2022 and will be conducted by Gustavo Dudamel. The cast will star Stephen Milling, John Relyea, Javier Camarena, Julien Behr, Matthias Goerne, Kathryn Lewek, Sara Blanch, Lucy Crowe, and Núria Rial.
