Gran Teatre del Liceu Cancels Two ‘La Traviata’ Performances

By Francisco Salazar

The Gran Teatre del Liceu has canceled performances of Verdi’s “La Traviata” on Dec. 8 and 9, 2020.

The company announced that due to the fact that it will not be able to perform for a least 50 percent of its hall, it has decided to do away with the next two performances. The company announced that performing for 500 audience members is economically unsustainable and affects the artistic reputation of the company.

The Liceu noted that the PROCICAT is working to see if it can increase the audience in the next hours or days. As a result, the Liceu hopes to continue performing the production.

The Barcelona company is currently in the midst of a run of Verdi’s famed masterwork starring Lisette Oropesa, Pretty Yende, and Kristina Mkhitaryan. Performances are set to run until Dec. 30.
