The Gran Teatre del Liceu has announced two cast changes for the Dec. 27 performance of “Madama Butterfly.”

The company said, “In the performance on December 27th of ‘Madama Butterfly,’ soprano Carolina López Moreno will perform the role of Cio-Cio-San in place of Sonya Yoncheva, who is still affected by a severe cold. On the other hand, the role of Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton will be performed by tenor Celso Albelo, in place of Matthew Polenzani, due to medical advice.

Moreno recently performed “La Rondine” with the London Symphony Orchestra and has performed at the Puccini Festival Torre del Lago, Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Club, the Berliner Philharmonie, the Jugendstil-Festhalle Landau, and Cambridge University in England, among others. She has performed the works of Offenbach, Verdi, Mascagni, Leoncavallo, Mercadante, Poulenc, Puccini, and Nino Rota.

Albelo is set to perform “Rigoletto” at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and “La tabernera del puerto” at the Teatro de la Zarzuela this season.

“Madama Butterfly” is set to close Dec. 28 with Saioa Hernandez in the title role.
