By Francisco Salazar

The Gran Teatre del Liceu has announced cast changes for its upcoming production of Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos.”

The company announced that due to an injury, Iréne Theorin has canceled her participation in the title role. As a result, soprano Miina-Liisa Varela will sing the role of Primadonna (Ariadne).

Additionally, Brandon Jovanovich has been forced to cancel his participation in the production due to the impossibility of traveling from the United States, after being in contact with a COVID-19 positive. As a result, he will be replaced by David Pomeroy.

“Ariadne auf Naxos” will open on Sept. 22 and will feature two casts. The first cast, which will not be led by Varela will also star Samantha Hankey, Nikolai Schukoff, Elena Sancho Pereg, and Benjamin Appl. Pomeroy will join the second cast which also stars Appl, Johanni van Oostrum, Sara Blanch, and Paula Murrihy.

Josep Pons conducts the production by Katie Mitchell.
