Gran Teatre del Liceu Announces New Ring Cycle for 2029-30 Season
By Francisco SalazarThe Gran Teatre del Liceu has announced its will present a new production of the Ring Cycle at the end of the 2029-30 season.
The company will premiere Wagner’s new Tetralogy in the 26-27 season in a new production by Tobias Kratzer, which will be a co-production with the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich. The first installment will be presented in January and February of 2027 and will star Nicholas Brownlee (Wotan), Kartal Karagedik (Donner), Roger Padullés (Froh), Nicky Spence (Loge), Georg Nigl (Alberich), Mikeldi Atxalandabaso (Mime), Ante Jerkunica (Fasolt), Wilhelm Schwinghammer (Fafner), Tanja Ariane Baumgartner (Fricka), Anett Fritsch (Freia), Okka von der Damerau (Erda), Ximena Agurto (Woglinde), Jennifer Feinstein (Wellgunde) and Helena Ressurreição(Flosshilde).
Jonathan Nott will conduct the Cycle.
In a statement, Víctor Garcia de Gomar said, “Each reading of the Ring is not a repetition, but an act of creation and vindication typical of a theatre. Presenting a new production is entering a sound and philosophical architecture that, rather than being performed, must be occupied and inhabited. Tobias Kratzer’s reading was, for us, the discovery of the best Ring that Barcelona deserves: a Ring of our generation that we are very excited to present, not only for the contemporary perspective and the magic it proposes, but also for the literalness with which it respects the way Wagner conceived his work.”
The last time the Gran Teatre del Liceu presented the Tetralogy was between the 2012-13 and 2015-16 seasons, in the production by Robert Carsen with musical direction by Josep Pons.
