Gran Teatre del Liceu Announces New Cast Change for ‘Carmen’

By Francisco Salazar

The Gran Teatre del Liceu has announced a new cast change for its Jan. 8, 2024 performance of Bizet’s “Carmen.”

The company said, “In today’s performance, January 8, the role of Don José in the opera ‘Carmen’ is played by tenor Freddie De Tommaso, due to Michael Spyres’ indisposition due to a cold.”

De Tommaso will make his house debut earlier than expected with the performance. He is in the midst of rehearsals for a production of “Un Ballo in Maschera” at the Gran Teatre del Liceu which opens in February. He is also set to perform in a concert with Lise Davidsen at the Liceu and later this season will perform in a production of “Adriana Lecouvreur.”

De Tommaso joins a cast that includes Simón Orfila, Clémentine Margaine, and Adriana González. Josep Pons conducts the production by Calixto Bieito.
