By Francisco Salazar

The Gran Teatre del Liceu has announced a cast change for its production of “Norma.”

The company noted that Riccardo Massi will sing the role of Pollione replacing Paolo Fanale, who has been forced to withdraw due to health issues.

Massi has performed at the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House, Teatro alla Scala, Bayerische Staatsoper, Deutsche Oper Berlin, and Canadian Opera Company. Before becoming an opera singer he was a stuntman who worked on such films as “Gangs of New York” and “The Passion of the Christ.”

The Italian tenor joins a cast that includes Nicolas Testé, Marina Rebeka, and Varduhi Abrahamyan. Domingo Hindoyan conducts the production by Alex Olle. A second cast will include Airam Hernández, Marko Mimica, Marta Mathéu, Sonya Yoncheva, and Teresa Iervollino.

“Norma” opens on July 18 and runs through July 31, 2022.
