Gran Teatre del Liceu Announces Cast Change for 2022-23 ‘Tosca’

By Francisco Salazar

The Gran Teatre del Liceu has announced a cast change for its production of “Tosca.”

The company noted that Michael Fabiano and Maria Agresta will take over the roles of Cavaradossi and Tosca replacing Roberto Alagna and Aleksandra Kurzak, who have felt unable to play their respective roles in this staging of ‘Tosca’ and have finally decided to retire from the project.

The production by Rafael R. Villalobos “highlights the political, moral and social pressure that weighs on the public, drawing parallels with the oppression suffered by Pier Paolo Pasolini (murdered because he was considered an enemy of the government) and the personal torment of Caravaggio, as seen by Santiago Ydáñez.”

Agresta and Fabiano have performed “Tosca” together at the Teatro Real and Paris Opera receiving rave reviews.

“Tosca” opens on Jan. 4 and runs through Jan. 21, 2023 with Sondra Radvanovsky, Joseph Calleja, Monica Zanettin, Evgeny Nikitin, Luca Salsi, and George Gagnidze also starring.
