Gotham Early Music Scene (GEMS) will present “C3: Countertenors, a Consort, & Continuo” as part of its inaugural season of Open Gates Project.

The concert will take place on Feb. 11, 2022 at 7 pm at Holt Trinity Lutheran Church in Manhattan. The performance will also be live-streamed.

The program features countertenors Biraj Barkakaty, Wei En Chan, Patrick Dailey, Iván Maira Feliciano, and Jonathan May. Motomi Igarashi, Larry Lipnik, Rosamund Morley, and Pat Neely form the viol consort. Dongsok Shin plays the harpsichord.

Works by William Byrd, Henry Purcell, Andrea Gabrieli, Trevor Weston, George Frederic Handel, Claudio Monteverdi, and Francesco Cavalli will be performed by the ensemble.

The Open Gates Project presented its first concert “The Diving Feminine: Centering Women of Color in Early Music” in Nov. 2021. Executive Director of GEMS and co-directors of the Open Gates Project, bass-baritone Joe Chappel and soprano Michele Kennedy began this project to “create greater access to stages for musicians of color in Early Music, while also seeking to create greater access to Early Music for underserved communities. The Project aims to see increased diversity on the stage and in the audience.”
