Ginger Costa-Jackson, Terrence Chin-Loy, Mikaela Bennett, & John Brancy to Headline MasterVoices’ Presentation of Original Version of ‘Carmen’

By David Salazar

Mastervoices is set to present the original version of Bizet’s “Carmen” with Jazz at Lincoln Center on Oct. 25, 2022.

The opera will feature dialogue instead of recitative with an English translation by Sheldon Harnick.

Mezzo Ginger Costa-Jackson, Terrence Chin-Loy, Mikaela Bennett, and John Brancy star in the production. Other cast members include Nicole Fernandez-Coffaro, Kimberly Sogioka, Zhengyi Bai, Michael Kelly, and Leo Radosavljevic. Sammi Cannold directs, while Gustavo Zajac choreographs. Ted Sperling conducts the Orchestra of St. Luke’s.

“I’m exceptionally excited to be bringing ‘Carmen’ to life with MasterVoices and under Ted Sperling’s tremendous leadership,” said Cannold in an official press statement. “This production aims to explore Carmen’s relationship to freedom, manipulation, and liberation in service of probing at what power meant for women in 19th century Europe and more importantly, how we view that power now. Ted and I are so fortunate to be joined by such phenomenal performers as well as our choreographer Gustavo Zajac, whose work in the piece will revolve around bringing the above narrative to life through lyrical and flamenco dance.”

The performance kicks off at 8 pm in Rose Theatre.
