Gerard Schneider, Brenda Rae & Nicholas Brownlee Highlight Oper Frankfurt’s 2020-21 Season

Oper Frankfurt has announced its 2020-21 season.

The German house will present 11 new productions and a number of revivals and recitals.

New Productions 

Monika Buczkowska, Judita Nagyová, Peter Marsh, Simon Neil, and Alfred Reiter star in Ligeti’s “La Grand Macabre.” Sebastian Weigle conducts a production by Vasily Barkhatov.

Performance Dates: Sept. 13-Oct. 17, 2020

Katharina Thoma will direct Offenbach’s “The Bandits,” which will be conducted by Karsten Januchske. Gerard Schneider, Michael McCown, Tianji Lin, Magnús Baldvinsson, and Theo Lebow star in the new production.

Performance Dates: Oct. 18, 2020 – Jan. 3, 2021

Caterina Panti Liberovici will direct Donizetti’s comic gem “Don Pasquale” with a cast that includes Donato Di Stefano, Simon Bailey, Danylo Matviienko, Mikolaj Trabka, Francisco Brito, Simone Osborne, Florina Ilie, and Michael Porter. James Hendry and Simone De Felice conduct.

Performance Dates: Nov. 6-25, 2020

Alexander Zemlinsky’s “Der Traumgörge” gets a production by Tilmann Köhler with Markus Poschner conducting. Ian Koziara, Eleonore Marguerre, Juanita Lascarro, and Liviu Holender star.

Performance Dates: Nov. 22, 2020 – Jan. 31, 2021

Olesya Golovneva and Andrea Caré star in a production of “Fedora” by Christof Loy. Carlo Montanaro conducts.

Performance Dates: Jan. 17 – Feb. 26, 2021

Guanqun Yu, Stefano La Colla, Claudia Mahnke, and Gevorg Hakobyan star in Verdi’s “Aida.” Lydia Steier directs a production conducted by Jader Bignamini.

Performance Dates: Feb. 14-April 24, 2021

Manuel Schmitt will direct a double bill of “The Burning Fiery Furnace” and “The Prodigal Son” with a cast headlined by Peter Marsh, Domen Krizaj, Gabriel Rolinson, Magnús Baldvinsson, and Jonathan Abernethy. Mario Antonio Marra conducts.

Performance Dates: March 13-25, 2021

Ted Huffman directs Handel’s “Orlando” with a cast featuring Zanda Švēde,  Kateryna Kasper, Dmitry Egorov, Florina Ilie, and Bozidar Smiljanic. Simone De Felice conducts.

Performance Dates: March 21–May 15, 2021

Sebastian Weigle conducts a production of “Boris Godunov” directed by Keith Warner. Ain Anger stars in the title role.

Performance Dates: May 9–June 6, 2021

Maria Bengtsson, Elena Zilio, Ambur Braid, Claudia Mahnke, Florina Ilie, and Cecelia Hall star in “Dialogues des Carmélites.” Claus Guth directs a new production conducted by Giedre Slekyté.

Performance Dates: June 20–July 14, 2021

Ronchetti’s “Inferno” gets a new production by Kay Voges and Marcus Lobbes with Tito Ceccherini conducting. Sebastian Kuschmann, Jan Jakub Monowid, Matthew Swensen, Frederic Mörth, Eric Ander, Karolina Makula, and Alexander Kravets headline the production.

Revivals 

Brenda Rae, Francesco Demuro, Andrzej Filonczyk, and Kihwan Sim highlight Bellini’s “I Puritani” with Oksana Lyniv conducting.

Rory Macdonald and Florian Erdl conduct Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro” with a cast that includes Liviu Holender, Adriana Gonzalez, Domen Križaj, Iain MacNeil, Heather Engebretson, Bianca Tognocchi, Bianca Andrew and Kelsey Lauritano.

Performance Dates: Sept. 18, 2020-March 27, 2021

Sabina Cvilak takes on the title role in Shosatkovich’s “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk” with Dmitry Golovnin, Oleg Tsibulko, and AJ Glueckert. Takeshi Moriuchi conducts.

Performance Dates: Sept. 27-Oct. 24, 2020

Roland Böer conducts Handel’s “Xerxes” with Cecelia Hall and Bianca Andrew sharing the title role. Eric Jurenas, Kateryna Kasper, Elizabeth Sutphen, Katharina Magiera, Gordon Bintner, and Thomas Faulkner round out the cast.

Jessica Rose Cambio sings the title role in Puccini’s “Manon Lescaut” with Martin Muehle and Domen Križaj. Sesto Quatrini conducts Puccini’s breakout opera.

Humperdinck’s “Hansel and Gretel” stars Sebastian Holecek, Claudia Mahnke, Bianca Andrew, Judita Nagyová, Monika Buczkowska, Kateryna Kasper, Susan Bullock, Karolina Makuła, and Bianca Tognocchi.

Performance Dates: Nov. 29-Dec. 20, 2020

Alina Adamski, Florina Ilie, Daniel Behle, Michael Porter, Thomas Faulkner, and August Zirner star in Mozart’s “The Abduction from the Seraglio.” Giedrė Šlekytė conducts.

Benjamin Reiners and Giedrė Šlekytė conducts Bizet’s “Carmen” with Zanda Švēde in title role, Evan LeRoy Johnson as Don José, Nombulelo Yende and Angela Vallone as Micaëla, and Kihwan Sim as Escamillo.

Performance Dates: April 17-May 8, 2021

Gerard Schneider takes on the title role of Massenet’s “Werther” with Gaëlle Arquez as Charlotte. Francesco Lanzillotta conducts the production with Heather Engebretson and Gordon Bintner rounding out the cast.

Domen Križaj sings the title role of Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” with Gerard Schneider, Jonathan Abernethy, Penny Sofroniadou, and
