Garsington Opera, The Lord Mayor’s Appeal To Produce Original Opera With 250 Students

By David Salazar

The Garsington Opera will be working together with The Lord Mayor’s Appeal on a work inspired by Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” that will include 250 students between the ages of 11-18.

Per a press release, the students will use their own words, compose songs, and even sing repertory from the famed opera. They will also design the set and costumes for the production. The subsequent performance will fuse the genres of rap, YouTube, and opera on July 16, 2019 at the Old Library in Guildhall, City of London.

The schools involved include City of London Academy – Highbury Grove, Drapers’ Academy, Hammersmith Academy, Prendergast School, Prendergast Ladywell School, and Westminster City School. The students have varying degrees of experience in the arts.

Professional roles in the production will be sung by baritone Roberto Gildon, soprano Samantha Crawford, and rapper MC Angel.

The project will also be documented in a short film that is set to be created by the Positive Action Through Creativity charity.

The Garsington Opera is showcasing a series of operas this season to celebrate its 30th anniversary. They include “The Bartered Bride,” “Don Giovanni,” “Fantasio,” The Turn of the Screw,” and “Vespers of 1610.”
