Fresh Squeezed Opera Launches Virtual Vocal Lab

By David Salazar

Fresh Squeezed Opera has announced a new lab aimed at composers of all ages, nationalities, education levels, races, genders, and backgrounds.

The Fresh Squeezed Vocal Lab will give composers the chance to work with renowned vocalists in the creation of a new piece; composers also have the option of workshopping another older piece. In keeping with COVID-19 safety guidelines, all pieces must be for no more than one vocalist and pianist.

The lab will also include masterclasses and demonstrations from Fresh Squeezed Opera members as they help composers expand their skills in vocal composition. Vocal masterclasses will be held by baritone Daniel Klein and mezzo-soprano Devony Smith with composer/conductor Whitney George showcasing an engraving workshop.

The virtual lab is set to take place over two weekends including July 9-11 and July 23-25, 2021.

The deadline for submissions is on Feb. 5.
