Welcome back as we explore the latest CD and DVD releases from around the opera world.

This week, audiences will get to hear a world premiere recording from one of Verismo’s biggest composers. There are also a number of remasters.

Aribert Reimann: Ein Traumspiel, Denn Bleiben ist nirgends

Albert Reimann’s “Ein Traumspiel” and “Denn Bleiben ist nirgends” are released with casts that includes Franziska Rabl, Karsten Jesgarz, James Tolksdorf, and Marek Reichert. The Opernchor Theater Hof, Hofer Symphoniker, Walter E. Gugerbauer, Martin Engler, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, and Manuel Nawri are featured in the album.

Die schöne Müllerin

Georg Nigl and Alexander Gergelyfi release a recording of Schubert’s “Die schöne Müllerin” in a version that is quite different from what we usually hear. The new recording uses the Tafelklavier (square piano) built around 1810 by Carl Withum. Alpha Classics releases.

Wagner: Die Walküre

Herbert von Karajan’s recording of Wagner’s “Die Walküre” features an outstanding cast, including Austrian star soprano Gundula Janowitz (Sieglinde), legendary bass-baritone Thomas Stewart (Wotan), Jon Vickers (Siegmund), and the dazzling Régine Crespin (Brünnhilde).

Lysistrata

PENTATONE releases Mark Adamo’s “Lysistrata, or The Nude Goddess.” Adamo said,”When Gil [Rose] told me he wanted to stage this piece in concert in February 2025 as a prelude to making its first-ever professional recording, I was—to use the technical term—over the moon. We’d worked together once before, when Gil made (for this label!) the début record of John Corigliano’s second opera, The Lord of Cries, on which I’d collaborated as librettist and which was ultimately nominated for a GRAMMY as Best Opera Recording, so I already knew the high standards of casting, playing, and engineering I could expect.”

The recording includes Maggie Finnegan, Anya Matanovič, Katherine Beck, Felicia Gavilanes, Lucy Schaufer, Jamie-Rose Guarrine, Kristen Watson, Christina English, Alexis Peart, Dominic Armstrong, Fred C. VanNess, Jr., John Moore, Nathan Halbur, Nathan Halbur, Nicholas Fahrenkrug, Fausto Miro, Neal Ferreira, Nicholas Fahrenkrug, and Kevin Deas.

Marina

Decca releases Girodano’s first opera, which was recorded at the world premiere performances at Milan’s historic Teatro dal Verme in February 2026. The recording stars soprano Eleonora Buratto, Freddie De Tommaso, Mihai Damian, and Nicholas Mogg. The Coro del Teatro Petruzzelli di Bari and Orchestra I Pomeriggi Musicali is conducted by Vincenzo Milletarì.

When the opera was performed OperaWire said, Buratto was “a prima donna of extraordinary elegance, nobility, and interpretive intelligence.”

Charles Silver: La Belle au Bois Dormant (Sleeping Beauty)

Guylaine Girard, Julien Dran, Kate Aldrich, Thomas Dolié, Matthieu Lécroart, Clémence Tilquin, and Adrien Fournaison are featured Charles Silver’s work with  Hungarian National Choir; Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra and György Vashegyi.

Charles Silver was born in Paris in 1868 to a traveling salesman of Russian origins and studied at the Conservatoire under Théodore Dubois and Jules Massenet, and won the Premier Prix de Rome in 1891 with his cantata “L’Interdit.” He wrote a number of operas, perhaps inspired by his wife, the singer Georgette Bréjean, who was a leading interpreter of Massenet’s “Manon.”

Lortzing: Der Waffenschmied

Gundula Janowitz, Sieglinde Wagner, Martin Vantin, Thomas Stewart, and Josef Greindl star in this remastered release featuring the Radio-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and Christoph Stepp. Deutsche Grammophon releases the album on Digital platforms only.
